BBL Writing Contest

Contest Details

The Writing Contest opens November 1, 2021. Writers can submit once to each of three categories: short stories, poems and comics. Entry is free! There are two age groups for patrons: youth (up to 17) and adult (18+). Submissions can take any of the following forms:

Short Stories: Short stories can be up to 500 words in a 12-point font. No illustrations or drawings are allowed in the short story category.

Poems: Poems can be up to 12 lines. Write your poem in any form (sonnet, ode, haiku, etc). No illustrations or drawings are allowed in the poems category.

Comics: Comics can be hand drawn or digital. Comics can be 2-4 pages long, and must be on white, letter size (8½ x 11") paper, with page numbers. You can create a free scan of your comic by visiting the library.

Entries close November 30th. Voting will be open from December 4th to 11th. Winning participants will be notified the following week.

Rules For Entrants

  • You must live within or near the Beaumont area.
  • You can submit up to one item per category. That is: any combination of 1 short story, 1 poem and 1 comic max.
  • All entries must be your own original work. Please do not adapt an already existing literary work by changing it slightly.
  • Your work must not have appeared anywhere in print or online previously. For youth, modified school assignments are acceptable for entry.
  • All finalist and winning entries are checked using a plagiarism checker before they are sent to the judges. If an entry found to be plagiarized, the entry will be immediately disqualified.
  • You can address mature themes, but we reserve the right to decide if overly explicit situations or gratuitous violence are not suitable for either age category.
  • Entries must meet the criteria stated above and must be submitted electronically (email austin@beaumontlibrary.com). Physical copies will not be accepted.
  • Your name must not appear anywhere on the entry itself (not on pages, or in the file name). Please give your items titles so they can be identified for voting.
  • All entries must be submitted by November 30, 2021 at 12 midnight.
  • By entering the contest, you consent to having your name and work published in print and online Bibliotheque de Beaumont Library promotional material, such as our website and social media, should your submission win.
